The Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU sets essential requirements for the safety, electromagnetic compatibility efficient use of the radio spectrum in the European Union.

Products in scope are those that have some form of wifi, bluetooth, or radio wave function, and be one of the following types of product that are mentioned specifically:

  • handheld mobile phones
  • tablets and e-readers
  • digital cameras
  • headphones, headsets, and earbuds
  • handheld video game consoles
  • portable speakers
  • keyboards and wireless mice

Laptops will be included from Spring 2026. Currently toys are not in scope unless they fall within one of the above categories. This could change in the future. We have produced a fact sheet for BTHA members outlining the requirements in further detail.
