REACH Microplastics restriction: updated scope

The European Commission recently updated their interpretation of the scope of the REACH microplastics restriction.

The Commission microplastics web page now states that articles with glitter affixed on their surface do not fall within the scope of the restriction. This interpretation has also been confirmed in direct email correspondence with the Commission technical services team.

This is an important change and while not legally binding it is a positive development and unlikely to be reversed when the Commission Q&A document is published later this year.

The BTHA technical team has therefore updated the microplastics guidance document which has been published on the BTHA website here.
